PowerSkin Conference 2021

Lecture at Tor Vergata University of Rome
Pierluigi D’Acunto has been invited by Prof. Andrea Micheletti and Prof. Ilaria Giannetti of Tor Vergata University of Rome to give a lecture on structural design and graphic statics. The lecture, which is open to the students of Building Engineering and Architecture, will take place on 11.12.2020.

Workshop at EPFL
On 12.11.2020, Patrick Ole Ohlbrock and Pierluigi D’Acunto will give an online lecture and workshop on graphic statics and computational structural design at the EPFL. The event is part of the course Interactive Conceptual Design of Structural Forms held by Prof. Corentin Fivet, who leads the Structural Xploration Lab at EPFL.

Advanced Building Skins Conference 2020
On 27.10.2020, Federico Bertagna and Pierluigi D’Acunto presented their latest research work on the design of structural shading components for facade retrofitting at the Advanced Building Skins Conference 2020 in Bern (Switzerland).

Workshop at the University of Michigan
On 16.10.2020, Patrick Ole Ohlbrock and Pierluigi D’Acunto will give an online lecture and workshop on graphic statics and computational structural design at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning (University of Michigan). The event is part of the course Topology + timber co-organized by the University of Michigan and SOM Chicago.

Workshop - Polysemy of Structures - SEU&BJTU (China)
Ting Cao and Shuaizhong Wang were invited to lead a collaborative workshop between ETH, Beijing Jiaotong University, and Southeast University about Strong Structures under the title of "Polysemy of Structures" from 03.08 to 04.09.2020. The selected student projects from the workshop will be exhibited in Beijing Design Week.

Lectures at IWSS2020
Pierluigi D′Acunto, Léa Boulic, Federico Bertagna and Giulia Boller will present some of their current research projects at the 1st Italian Workshop on Shell and Spatial Structures (IWSS2020). The workshop will take place online on 25-26.06.2020. Further info available here.

Lecture at FHNW
Hannes Hofmann is invited by Thomas Boyle, lecturer for structural engineering at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), to present about his research on the collaboration of architects and structural engineers. International Symposium, Candela – Isler – Müther
An international symposium on the work of Félix Candela, Heinz Isler and Ulrich Müther will take place on March 27th and 28th, 2020. It is organised by the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) in cooperation with the Chair of Structural Design at ETH Zurich, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Müther-Archive at the University of Applied Sciences in Wismar. here

ITA Talk on Reuse and Grammar-based Design
In the frame of a research collaboration between the Chair of Structural Design at ETH Zurich and the Structural Xploration Lab at EPFL, Jan Brütting and Ioannis Mirtsopoulos from the EPFL will present their current work on the reuse of structural members and grammar-based design. The ITA Talk will take place on the 05.03.2020 at HIB Open Space 2.

Pierluigi D′Acunto was invited by the Department of Architecture of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to present the latest developments in his research on structural design. The lecture was held at KIT on the 10.12.2019.

Patrick Ole Ohlbrock and Pierluigi D’Acunto have been invited by the advanced research unit at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) Chicago to give an online presentation about their current research on Computational Structural Design. The web conference will take place on 12.11.2019.

Talk at Foster + Partners

Pierluigi D’Acunto and Patrick Ole Ohlbrock will present the latest developments of their research on Vector-based 3D graphic statics and the Combinatorial Equilbrium Modelling (CEM) at the Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge. The lecture will take place on the 26.04.2019.

3. Prize - "Auf IT gebaut"
Patrick Ole Ohlbrock and Pierluigi D’Acunto have won the third prize in the competition “Auf IT gebaut” with their entry Combinatorial Equilibrium Modelling. The award ceremony took place within the BAU Trade Fair on January 15th in Munich.

"Contextualizing Early Glulam"
Where does the industrial timber come from? In a 2-day research workshop, part of the SNF-Project "Terner & Chopard and the new timber", we discuss the conditions of early industrial timber with interntaional guest: 24 & 25 Jan at HPT C 103. Lecture - Rui Furtado - Cooperation. Some recent projects
Join us on 12 November 5pm at HIB Open Space 2 when Portuguese engineer Rui Furtado speaks about the role of structural thinking in the design process. Rui Furtado is one of the most important European structural engineers working with outstanding architects such as OMA, Eduardo Souto de Moura or Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

Lecture Prof. Manfred Grohmann
On the 7th of November, we welcome Professor Manfred Grohman at the ETH for a public lecture at 5 pm in the HIB (Open Space 2). Manfred Grohmann designs and teaches structures for a radically different architecture. Together with Klaus Bollinger, he is founding director of one of the most important engineering offices in Germany.

IASS 2018 Hangai Prize
Léa Boulic is one of the four awardees of the 2018 Hangai Prize from the International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures for her paper "Design strategies of hybrid bending-active systems based on graphic statics and a constrained force density method”.

IASS 2018 Video Competition Organizers′ Choice award
Hannes Hofmann has won the Organizers′ Choice award in the IASS 2018 video competition. The competition asked for an engaging 2 minute video presenting recent research. You can watch the video here.

Design Studio Schwartz FS2017
The Design Studio will be focused on the design of a new ground station for earth observation in collaboration with the Swiss Space Center. This will combine a tower for satellite communication, a research hub and facilities for visitors. More information here.

As part of the elective course Experimental Explorations on Space and Structure, on Thursday 05.11 at 9:00 the architects Sancho-Madridejos will give a lecture entitled The Fold as Generator of Spaces. The lecture will take place at HIL E 67 (Red Hell).

Exhibition Construction and Transformation

Matthias Beckh, Pierluigi D′Acunto and Juanjo Castellon will represent the Chair in the International Workshop Estructuras Colaborativas that will take place in the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile from the 16th to the 18th of March. The workshop will be led with the support of Alessandro Tellini from the Raplab.

Successful InnovEDUm application
Our project "Geometry - Based Structural Design" for the development of a unified approach to teach structural design, a collaboration between the Chairs of Prof. Block and Prof. Schwartz, has been approved by the teaching advisory of the ETH and will be supported by an InnovEDUm grant.

2014
CCA Montreal
Juanjo Castellon has been invited by the Canadian Center of Architecture to pursue a research residency in Montreal from the 17th to the 31st of October and will be giving a lecture about his current research on the 23rd of October.

Book Launch Conference
In mid-October the anthology Holz: Stoff oder Form, edited by Mario Rinke and Joseph Schwartz, will be published. On the 1st of November some of the contributions featured in the book will be presented in a conference. All those interested are kindly invited.

6OSME Tokyo
On the 12th August 2014 Pierluigi D′Acunto and Juanjo Castellon will give a lecture entitled Folding Augmented: A Design Method to Integrate Structural Folding in Architecture at the 6OSME Conference at the University of Tokyo.

Apéro 9th April 14: concrete benches
On 27th of March our concrete benches have been delivered. On 9th April at 6PM we invite all involved persons for an Apéro to celebrate the  successful result of our teamwork. Many thanks to the RapLab and the concrete lab of ETH Zurich.

Symposium: Thermodynamic Materialism II
Through a series of short lectures the symposium that has been organised by the chair will take place at the ETH Zurich on 29.11.2013 and is trying to map some of the current approaches towards a rethinking of the interaction of solid and void and the inherent architectural potential

Lecture at EPFL
On 2.12.2013 Juanjo Castellon will give a lecture entitled The Spatial Potential of Hollow Structures invited by the Chair of Prof. Jeannette Kuo at EPFL. This lecture is part of the contents provided to the students of second year′s design studio, this year around the topic Constructing Logics: The Vision Machine.

Encounter
As part of the lectures series Encounter at the Faculty of Architecture at the IE University in Madrid Toni Kotnik will give a lecture titled Digital Poiesis: Architecture between Physical Necessity and Freedom of Design on 28.11.2013 .

Interdisciplinarity - Theory and/or Practice?
On 12.11.2013 Prof. Joseph Schwartz will give a lecture on the topic of construction and beauty as part of the lecture series Interdisciplinarity - Theory and/or Practice? at the DFG-Graduate Programme Art and Engineering an der Technical University Hamburg-Harburg.

Form Finding, Form Shaping, Designing Architecture
Prof. Joseph Schwartz and Toni Kotnik are presenting some ideas on the interplay of architecture and engineering at the conference Form Finding, Form Shaping, Designing Architecture that is taking place at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio between 10.10 to 11.10.2013.

The Future of Energy
Toni Kotnik has been invited by the GSAPP at Columbia University to join a panel at the daylong conference The Future of Energy that is taken place at the Modern Museum of Art in New York on 2nd October 2013.

Design Modelling Symposium
At the 4.Design Modelling Symposium 2013 in Berlin, a conference aiming at Rethinking Prototyping, Toni Kotnik and Pierluigi D′Acunto will present some theoretical thoughts on structural design under the title "Operative Diagramatology".

Lecture at UOSARCH Seoul
On the 26th September 2013 Juanjo Castellon and Pierluigi D′Acunto will give a lecture entitled Material,Form&Force-Flow: Towards a Holistic Undestanding on Design Thinking at University of Seoul School of Architecture.

Augmented Innovations
Juanjo Castellon and Pierluigi D′Acunto will present the results of the research project "Augmented Innovations" developed as a collaboration between the Chair of Structural Design and Samsung ′s Next Generation Design Group. The presentation will be hold on 23.09 at Samsung′s Corporate Design Centre in Seoul.

Augmented Innovations
As part of a collaboration between the Chair of Structural Design and the Next Generation Design Group at Samsung′s Corporate Design Centre, starting from Monday 02.09, a workshop held by Juanjo Castellon and Pierluigi D′Acunto will take place at ETH Zurich to discuss the developments of the project "Augmented Innovations".

Second International Conference Structures and Architecture
Many chair members will take part on ICSA 2013 at Guimaraes (Portugal). During three days Prof. Dr. Schwartz, Lara Borgonovi e Silva, Juliana Felkner, Mario Rinke and Maximilian Schrems will persent papers.

Spanish Meeting on Computational Geometry
Llius Enrique nd Rafel Jaume (FU Berlin) will be presenting the article "Stackable Tessellations" at the XV Spanish Meeting on Computational Geometry which will be held in Seville on the 26-28th of June.

CAADRIA 2013 Singapore
On Friday the 17th May 2013 Maximilian Schrems will be talking about "Statically motivated form finding based on extended graphical statics (EGS)" at the CAADRIA 2013 conference at the National University of Singapore.

Tensinet Symposium 2013
On the 9th of May 2013 Pierluigi D′Acunto will give a lecture on the project "AA/ETH Pavilion" at the Tensinet Symposium 2013 at the Mimar Sinan Fine-Art University (Istanbul).

On 2nd May 2013 Wolfgang König, professor of the history of technology, will be giving a guest lecture on "Algorithm and intuition - a possible analogy for architecture theory from the history of machine construction": 14:00 HIL E 67 (red hell)

SSCI
On the 18th of April Juliana Felkner will attend the IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI) at NTU, Singapore to present her work on interactive structural optimization and the architectural design of truss structures.

ETH-GSD Symposium
A research team consisting of Toni Kotnik, Juanjo Castellon and Pierluigi D′Acunto will take part in the symposium Thermodynamic Materialism organized by the Unit of   Prof. Iñaki Abalos  at GSD Harvard on Thursday 11th  of April. 

Future Traditions
At the symposium Future Traditions at the University of Porto on the impact of the computer on the discipline of architecture Toni Kotnik will be talking about the formalization of various kinds of perception by means of geometry

Princeton University
Toni Kotnik has been invited by the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment to present his research approch towards the geometric logic of energy flows at Princeton University at a lecture on Monday 4 March.
