Federico Bertagna is a doctoral candidate and lecturer at ETH Zurich.

He holds a Master’s degree in Building and Structural Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy. During his engineering studies, he developed an interest for architecture through participation in international workshops and design competitions. He spent the last year of his Master's studies at ETH Zurich as an invited visiting student at the Chair of Structural Design of Prof. Dr. Joseph Schwartz. After his graduation, Federico attained practical experience at Shimizu Structural Engineers Co., Ltd., a structural engineering office based in Tokyo, Japan.

Since September 2019, he is a doctoral candidate at the Chair of Structural Design. His doctoral thesis deals with the use of geometry-based graphical methods as a way to reconcile the disciplines of architecture, structural engineering, and building physics. His research interest focuses on the conceptual design of buildings and on the development of methodologies that allow for a holistic design approach. Additionally, he is also co-author of several publications in the field of architectural design and history of construction. At ETH, Federico complements his research activities with teaching both in the Department of Architecture and in the Department of Civil Engineering, where he is lecturer since 2022.
