The project Augmented Innovations in collaboration with the Next Generation Design Group at Samsung Electronics is part of a larger research currently under development at our Chair. The focus of this research is on the study and development of porous structures as a space making source in architecture and industrial design. In its first phase, the project builds on the programmatic idea of reconciliation of the disciplines of Engineering and Architecture, focusing on the diverse understandings of the role of folded forms, regarded as mediators between load-bearing capacity and architectural idea. Within this domain, folded geometries are intended as porous systems that combine at the same time structural integrity and spatial opportunities.
In particular, folding gives the chance to turn a two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional structurally active one. In addition, folding is a material and scale independent operation. Therefore, the same strategy can be applied to the design of different objects, ranging from architecture down to electronics.
The final output of the collaboration with Samsung consisted in the design of an innovative electronic product working according to the concept of folding.
